Anecdote- An anecdote is a brief, revealing account of an individual person or an incident, a story with a point', such as to communicate an abstract idea about a person, place or thing through the concrete details of a short narrative or to characterize by delineating a specific trait. Ocassionally humorous anecdotes differ from jokes because their primary purpose is not simply to provoke laughter but to reveals a truth more general than the brief tale itself.
Anecdotes may be real or fictional, the anecdotal digression is a common feature of literary, works and even oral anecdotes typically involve subtle exaggeration and dramatic shape designed to entertain the listeners. An anecdote is always presented as the recounting of a real incident involving actual persons and usually in an identifiable place. In the words of Jurgen Hein, they exhibit "a special realism" and "a claimed historical dimension".
An anecdote is a short story about a real person or event, usually serving to make the listeners laugh or ponder over a topic. Generally, the anecdote will relate to the subject matter that the group of people is discussing.
For Example - If a group of co-workers are discussing pets, and one co-worker tells a story about how her cat comes down stains at a certain time every night then that co-worker has just shared an anecdote. Let's look at some more examples of anecdotes:

The above example between co-workers is a sound one. Anecdotes pop up all day, everyday. You might be checking out at the super market one day and the cashier comments on your brand of apple juice. Perhaps it will spark a little story about the summer the cashier and her four-year-old went apple picking in upstate New York. Here are some more examples -
 I once had a border collie. She was so smart. Every morning, I'd open up the front door and she'd run out, pick up the newspaper and deliver it to my husband at the breakfast table.
 Oh, I love Ireland ! I visited the west coast six times last years. Have you ever been to Kilmacduagh ! It is an old monastery where the winds whip with songs of the deceased who are laid to rest there.
Purpose of Anecdotes
Whenever an anecdote is introduced either in real life or fiction, it provides background information. A co-worker might tell a little tale from her
childhood and all that does is paint a brighter picture for the other person. An author might write a scene where one of the character tells the other a bit of their back story, usually to create depth and intrigue.
